Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas is made through National Level Competitive Examination designed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Procedure for admission
Admission to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas is conducted by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya selection tests (JNVST). There are certain eligibility conditions which a student has to fulfil before he/she is able to appear in the admission test. Students who qualify the selection test have to also to submit some documents as proofs.
Children are also admitted against the vacant seats in Class IX and Class XI through Regional Level Examination/Marks in the previous qualifying examination. Education in Navodaya Vidyalayas is free of cost.
A total of 75 per cent of seats are reserved for rural children and a minimum of 33 per cent of seats are reserved for girls. Scheduled castes (SCs)/Scheduled castes (STs) also have due reservations of 15 per cent and 7½ per cent, respectively. The scheme envisages the establishment of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, one in each district of the country.

For admission in Kendriya Vidyalayas, the following guidelines are issued with effect from the academic session 2007–2008.
An advertisement is issued by the regional office in the local newspapers at the cluster level in the first week of February giving the admission schedule for registration, etc. and inviting children to get registered for admission in Kendriya Vidyalayas. This advertisement should indicate that admissions in Kendriya Vidyalayas are not restricted to central government employees and are open to all, with only certain priorities being laid down as per which children of different categories would receive priority in admission. The reservations for SC, ST and physically handicapped should also be indicated.
