Access to electricity is an important driver for development. Lakhs of households in our country are yet to realise their dream of owning an electricity connection. A scheme has been recently launched by the Government of India to fulfill this cherished dream. Titled as “Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana - Saubhagya”, the scheme aims to ensure electrification of all willing households in the country in rural as well as urban areas. Under the scheme, poor households would be provided electricity connections free of cost. Other households would also be provided electricity connections on payment of Rs.500 only, which shall be recovered by the DISCOMs/Power Departments in ten instalments along with electricity bills.
