National Girl Child Day
This topic provides information about the National Girl Child Day celebrated on 24 January every year.
The National Girl Child Day is celebrated in India every year on January 24. The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India initiated this celebration in 2008.
The objective of celebrating National Girl Child Day are as follows.
- Highlight the inequalities faced by girls in the country
- Promote awareness about the rights of a girl child
- Generate awareness on importance of girl education, health and nutrition
The theme of NGCD 2019 is “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow” and celebrating with objectives of generating awareness on the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and create a positive environment around valuing the girl child.
The celebrations also marked the anniversary of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme.
At the national level, the occasion was marked by felicitation of the 5 States and 25 Districts under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme for their exemplary performance. A booklet on “Innovations under BBBP” was also released on the occasion. The Ministry has compiled 38 Innovative Activities from Districts across the country to set an example for other Districts. These interventions have been categorized according to five themes, which are Survival, Protection, Education, Participation and Valuing Girls.
