People and Personalities of East Singhbhum District

The big stories often make the headlines of our historical narratives, but history is not only about the landmark events - it finds shape and character in the myriad events that led up to a flashpoint of change. An attempt to discover and document stories of people, events, and places linked to the freedom struggle of India at the micro level of the district has led to the creation of a Digital District Repository. Rani Bala Mukherjee

Rani Bala Mukherjee was a freedom fighter and wife of Late freedom fighter Hemchandra Mukherjee. She belonged originally to 14 Karabi Road Par Nagar Parsudih, Jamshedpur. She contributed to the 1942, Quit India Movement. During the Quit India Movement, she was in contact with Gandhiji. She was a true follower of Gandhiji and followed the path of truth similar to that of Gandhiji. She died at the age of 91 and her last rites were performed at Parvati Ghat of Bishtupur.

Ram Avatar Singh

Ram Avatar Singh was a freedom fighter and the son of Ramdas Singh. His wife’s name is Mrs. Neelam Singh. He had contributed to the 1942 Quit India Movement. He was MLA from Jamshedpur East Constituency from 1962-1967 and 1972-1977. He was EX- MLA of East Jamshedpur from CPI Party. He was in contact with Gandhiji. He was a true follower of Gandhiji and followed the path of truth similar to that of Gandhiji. He was also one of the freedom fighters from Jamshedpur amongst all other freedom fighters. He went to Bhojpur Central Jail and Patna Central Jail in 1942. He did receive copper plates and also received a pension from the Indian Government. His documents are present with the Bihar Government. He was a social worker and a farmer. He belonged to a very poor family and was educated till the 10th Standard. He died on 23 December 2011.

Prabhat Kusum Majumdar

Prabhat Kusum Majumdar was a freedom fighter. His date of birth was 1909. His wife’s name was Sarju Prabha Majumdar. He was involved in the Freedom movement. He contributed to 1942, Quit India Movement. During the Quit India Movement, he was sent to jails like Jamshedpur, Alipoor, Delhi, and Cuttack. For his contribution to independence, he received a copper plate from Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi on 15th August 1972. He died in the year 1987. He was a Great social worker.

Narayan Sao

Narayan Sao was a freedom fighter and son of the Late Nathuni Sao. His date of birth is 1924. His wife’s name was Late Gulab Devi. He had contributed to the 1942 Quit India Movement. He was educated till the tenth standard. During the Sepoy mutiny case, he was sent to Japanese jail during the second world war. He was involved in the Sepoy mutiny and was in contact with Subhash Chandra Bose. He was a true follower of Subhash Chandra Bose and followed the path of truth similar to that of Subhas Chandra Bose. Nails were drilled in his feet. He was also a great social worker. During the Second World War, he was recruited into the British Army. He was sentenced to death in the Sepoy mutiny. He died on 2 February 2001.

Makhan Lal Mukherjee

Makhan Lal Mukherjee was a freedom fighter. His wife’s name was Usha Rani. He had contributed to 1942, Quit India Movement. He was in contact with Gandhiji. He was a true follower of Gandhiji and followed the path of truth similar to that of Gandhiji. He has arrested in 1931 in Chittagong, Bangladesh. He was transferred to Faridabad Jail in 1932 but he broke out of the jail and went to Kolkata, West Bengal. He was also one of the freedom fighters from Pra Nagar, Jamshedpur amongst all other freedom fighters He did not receive a copper plate nor did he receive a pension from the Indian Government. His documents are present with the Bihar Government. He was an employee of Tata steel. He was a social worker and a Farmer. He died in 1960.

Govardhan Sonar

Govardhan Sonar was a freedom fighter and son of Nathu Sonar. He belonged originally to Jamshedpur, Jharkhand and his date of birth is 1916. His wife’s name was Rajkumari Devi. He had contributed to 1942, Quit India Movement. He was educated till the second standard. During the Quit India Movement, he was sent to Bhagalpur Jail for 18 days. He was involved in the damaging of electric wire. He was in contact with Gandhiji. He was a true follower of Gandhiji and followed the path of truth similar to that of Gandhiji. He was also one of the chief freedom fighters from Jamshedpur amongst all other freedom fighters of Jamshedpur. He died on 25 December 1986 at Chaibasa Hospital.

C. Vishweshwar Rao

C. Vishweshwar Rao was a Freedom Fighter. His father’s name was C.Birbhadra Rao. His wife’s name was Subhalakshmi. He was educated up to High secondary school. He contributed to 1942, Quit India Movement. He was in contact with Gandhiji. He was a true follower of Gandhiji and followed the path of truth similar to that of Gandhiji. He was also one of the freedom fighters from Sakshi, Jamshedpur amongst all other freedom fighters. He had received a copper plate from the Indian Government during the prime ministership of Smt. Indira Gandhi also received a pension from the Indian Government. His documents are present with the Bihar Government. He was an employee of Tata.

Aakhori Baleshwar Sinha

Aakhori Baleshwar Sinha was a freedom fighter and son of Lt.Jagannath Sinha. His date of birth is 17 October 1923. His wife's name was the Late Akhori Prabha Sinha. He had contributed to 1942, Quit India Movement. He was in contact with Gandhiji. He was a true follower of Gandhiji and followed the path of truth similar to that of Gandhiji. He was also one of the freedom fighters from Adityapur, Jamshedpur amongst all other freedom fighters He did not receive a copper plate nor did he receive a pension from the Indian Government. His documents are present with the Bihar Government. He was an employee of Tata steel.
