About the district

Known as the Rice Bowl of India, Raichur has the only gold manufacturing unit in the country and the nation’s most efficient thermal power plant. The district is set to energize its further growth with a Solar Photo Voltaic power plant and a proposed special Industrial zone.

The district is located in eastern part of Karnataka and is spread across 5 talukas – Devadurga, Lingasugur, Manvi, Raichur and Sindhanur. The district has a literacy rate of 59.56%.

Economic Growth

Raichur’s total GDP is INR 52.12 billion contributing 1.745%to state GSDP and the per capita annual income in the district is INR.47, 752. However, the GDDP trend is a steady 5% CAGR from 2007-08 to 2012-13; with the Agriculture and Allied segment emerging as the highest contributors at 3.15%.

Industrial Landscape

Raichur has 10 Large and Medium – scale Industries and 9,777 small-scale industries with aggregated investment INR 7.29 billion. 4 industrial areas and 4 industrial estates service the needs of the region. 6,285 acres of land is further identified for creating new industrial areas in Signodi – Yergara.
Raichur prides in its legacy, the KPC (Karnataka Power Corporation) Thermal Power Station which generates about 48% of the power supply of the state. This 1,470 MW thermal station is ISO 14001-2004 certified for its environment protection measures. In continuation of the effort, KPC is to invest INR 20.16 billion to establish a Solar Photo Voltaic power plant with a capacity of 3 MW.


This move is set to augment more developments with GoK already setting up a Power Generation Zone in the region and proposing Special Industrial Zone for Steel industries. Some of the other projects like Manufacturing of Pig Iron, Integrated Steel Plant, Ore pelletizing have also been approved by the High-Level Committee (HLC).


Raichur has 15% of its SSI units engaged in textile based activities. The established trading market for cotton and the leather products cluster activity adds impetus to these industries in the region.

The agro-based food processing sector is also a thrust area with the district known as the ‘Rice Bowl’ of India, 438,045 ha of land is used for the cultivation of Paddy with over 100 rice milling industries. Raichur exports Agriculture Products to European Countries and has good support infrastructure like APMC yards with 2 units of KSWC Ltd. and KMF. A multipurpose cold storage of 5000 MT capacity in the district enhances the ecosystem here.
