Apply online for PAN Card

Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card is a photo Identity Card that carries 10 digits alphanumeric Unique Number for every card holder. It is issued by Ministry of Finance (Government of India) and it can be used as Photo Identity for opening Bank Account, during travel in train with e-ticket and other purposes also.

Uses of PAN

PAN is mandatory for the following activities:

  • Filing of Income Tax (IT) return
  • Opening Demat Account to buy and sell Shares
  • Withdrawing or deposit or amount transfer of Rs 50,000 or more from one Bank account to another
  • For refund of income tax

Eligibility

  • Any individual, firm, joint venture can apply for PAN Card. For this, there is no minimum and maximum age limit.

Required documents to apply for PAN

  • Good quality passport size colour photo
  • Demand draft/ Cheque of amount Rs.107 (inclusive of service tax) as fee. The charges for applying for PAN is Rs. 994 (including service tax) for foreign communication address.
  • Aadhaar card is mandatory
  • Xerox copy of proof of identity
  • Xerox copy of proof of address

  13. Certificate of address signed by Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councillor or Gazetted Officer.

Note: Documents submitted as proof of address for serial numbers 1 to 7 should not be more than six months old from the date of application.

Fee for PAN Card and payment process

  • The fee for processing PAN application is Rs 107/- (inclusive of Service Tax). The charges for applying for PAN is Rs. 994 (including service tax) for foreign communication address.
  • Fee can be paid through Demand Draft, Cheque or Credit Card or Net Banking
  • Demand Draft/Cheque should be drawn in favour of- NSDL-PAN
  • Demand draft shall be payable at Mumbai and the Name and acknowledgement number should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft
  • Applicants making payment by cheque shall deposit a local cheque (drawn on any bank) with any HDFC Bank branch across the country (except Dahej). The applicant shall mention NSDLPAN on the deposit slip.

Process for online application of PAN

    • Before starting online application for PAN, you must have DD/Cheque of Rs 107 or you must have credit card to pay the application fee online.
    • Click on https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/form49A.html to apply online for PAN
    • First fill - Ward/Circle, Range, Commissioner, Area Code, AO Code, Range Code and AO Number related information
    • Click here to get above mentioned information
    • This information can also be obtained from the Income Tax Office
    • Once the details are kept ready, start filling the the form
    • In the form, you will also have to mention your office address. If you do not have office address then you may use any of your address for this purpose
    • Once the form is filled, submit the form
    • Check whether all entered information is correct. If all information is correctly entered then enter the code shown at the bottom of page and click on “Confirm” button
    • On completion of the above step, a form with Acknowledgement Number will appear
    • The acknowledgement number is your unique reference number for PAN application
    • Kindly quote this number for tracking the status of your PAN application
    • Save and print this acknowledgement form
    • After taking print of the Acknowledgement Form, paste your recent colour photograph and sign the acknowledgement (inside the box provided without touching the sides )
    • Use only black ink ball pen to sign the acknowledgement
    • Attach Xerox copy of Proof of identity, Proof of address and Demand Draft (DD) of amount Rs 105/- as fee with application
    • Write your name and Acknowledgement Number on the reverse of cheque/DD
    • If you are paying PAN application fee through cheque then deposit cheque in HDFC Bank in your city
    • Please check if the documents indicated in the following checklist is present before sending Acknowledgement Form to NSDL office:
      • Acknowledgement Form (With colour photo and signature)
      • Xerox copy of Proof of identity
      • Xerox copy of Proof of address
      • Demand Draft (DD) of amount Rs 107/-
    • Super scribe the envelope with 'APPLICATION FOR PAN - Acknowledgement Number' (e.g., 'APPLICATION FOR PAN - 881010100000097')
    • Application form should be sent to NSDL, 'Income Tax PAN Services Unit, National Securities Depository Limited, 3rd Floor, Sapphire Chambers, Near Banner Telephone Exchange, Banner, Pune - 411045 (Maharashtra)
    • Your acknowledgement, Demand Draft, if any, and proofs, should reach NSDL within 15 days from the date of online application
    • Applications received with demand draft or cheque as mode of payment shall be processed only on receipt of relevant proofs and realisation of payment

  1. What is PAN - Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric identifier, issued by Income Tax Department. Each assessee (e.g. individual, firm, company etc.) is issued a unique PAN.
  2. Who can apply on behalf of minor, lunatic, idiot, mentally retarded, deceased and wards of court? - Section 160 of IT Act, 1961 provides that a minor, lunatic, idiot, mentally retarded, deceased, wards of court and such other persons may be represented through a Representative Assessee. In such cases,
    • in the application for PAN, details of the a minor, lunatic, idiot, mentally retarded, deceased, wards of court, etc. should be provided.
    • Details of representative assessee have to be provided in item 14 of the application for PAN.
  3. Can I have more than one PAN? - No. Obtaining/possessing more than one PAN is against the law and may attract a penalty up to ₹10,000. Therefore, it is advisable not to obtain/possess more than one PAN.
  4. What should I do if I have more than one PAN? - If you have more than one PAN, you should surrender the additional PAN(s) by logging into ITD website. Alternatively, you may fill and submit PAN Change Request application form by mentioning the PAN which you are using currently on top of the form. All other PAN/s inadvertently allotted to you should be mentioned at item no. 11 of the form and the corresponding PAN card copy/s should be submitted for cancellation along with the form.
  5. What will I receive on submission of the PAN application form to a TIN-FC? - You will receive an acknowledgment with a unique 15-digit acknowledgment number on submission of the PAN application form.
  6. What is the procedure for applicants who cannot sign? - In such cases, Left Hand Thumb Impression (preferably in black ink) of the applicant should be taken on Form 49A/change request form at the place meant for signature. This should be attested by a Magistrate or a Notary Public or a Gazetted Officer, under official seal and stamp.
  7. What is the procedure to be followed when the applicant wants to update only the communication address? - If applicant wants to update the address for communication
    • For any update in existing PAN details, applicant is required to fill the form ‘Request for New PAN Card or / and Changes or Correction in PAN Data Form’.
    • Applicant should fill all the columns of the form and should tick the box on the left margin of address for communication. (In case of online application, this box is ticked by default).
    • Applicant should also indicate whether this is his Residence or Office address.
    • It is mandatory for all applicants other than individuals and HUF to mention office address as address for communication.
    • If the applicant wants to update any other address, he has to fill the details of the same in an additional sheet which is to be attached with the form. In such cases the applicant is also required to tick in the box provided on the left of item no. 8 on the application form.
    • It is mandatory for the applicant to provide proof of communication address
    • If change in any other address is sought, the applicant has to provide proof of the same.

  8. Do I need to apply for a new PAN when I move from one city to another? - Permanent Account Number (PAN), as the name suggests, is a permanent number and does not change. Changing the address though, may change the Assessing Officer. Such changes must, therefore, be intimated to ITD so that the PAN database of ITD can be updated. One can intimate change in address by filling up the form for Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN data. This form can be submitted at any TIN-FC or online at NSDL-TIN website.
  9. Is father’s name compulsory for female applicants (including married/divorced/widow)? - Female applicants, irrespective of their marital status, should write only father’s name in the PAN application form. There is no provision to mention husband's name in the application.
  10. Is it compulsory to mention telephone number/email ID on PAN application form? - It is mandatory for the applicants to mention either their "Telephone number" or valid "e-mail ID" so that they can be contacted in case of any discrepancy in the application and/or for receiving PAN through e-mail.
  11. When should I submit the application in the form "Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN data"? - You can submit the application in the form "Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN data" in the following cases:
    • When you already have PAN but want a new PAN card,
    • When you want to make some changes or corrections in your existing PAN details
  12. How do I obtain a new PAN card without any changes in details? - Those who have a PAN but have not received a PAN card or have lost their PAN card or wish to have a new PAN card with existing details, can fill the form for Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN data. Applicant is required to fill all the columns in the form but should not tick any of the boxes on the left margin.
  13. What should I do if there are any changes or correction in PAN data? - The applicant is required to fill all the columns of the form and tick the box(es) on the left margin of the appropriate item where change/correction is to be done.
  14. What are the documents required to be furnished while submitting the form (for making changes in existing card)? - Following documents are required to be submitted alongwith the form:
    • Proof of PAN (the one currently in use - mentioned at the top of the application) if available;
    • Proof of Identity;
    • Proof of Address;
    • Proof of Date of Birth (for Individual and Karta of HUF)
    • Proof in support of changes sought*, if any;
    • Proof of PAN(s) surrendered, if any;
  15. What documents can be submitted as proof of PAN? - Any one of the following documents can be submitted as proof of PAN:
    • Copy of PAN card
    • Copy of PAN allotment letter
    • No other documents are acceptable as proof of PAN. If any proof of PAN is not available, the application will be accepted on a 'good effort' basis.
  16. What documents can be submitted as proof of PAN surrendered? - Any one of the following documents can be submitted as proof of PAN surrendered:
    • Copy of PAN card
    • Copy of PAN allotment letter

    No other documents are acceptable as valid proof of PAN surrendered. If any proof of PAN surrendered is not available, then application will not be accepted
