About FSSAI Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. What is FSSAI Food License Registration ? Every food business operator involved in the manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale of food products must compulsorily obtain FSSAI Registration or License. It is a 14-digit registration or a license number that is printed on all the food packages. The licensing and registration procedure and requirements are regulated by Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011. Types of FSSAI Registration There are three types of FSSAI licenses. These categories depend upon the type and size of the food business and its total annual turnover as well. FSSAI Basic License FSSAI State License FSSAI Central License 1. Basic Registration If the annual turnover of the business is less than ₹ 1.5 Cr then the food business operator shall get registered with Registration Form A. 2. State Licence If the annual turnover of the business is between ₹1.5 crore and up to ₹50 crores then the food business operator shall apply for State license Form B. 3. Central Licence If the annual turnover of the business is above ₹ 50 crores, then the food business operator shall apply for Central License Form B. FSSAI Central License is mandatory for Ecommerce Website Owners and Import Export Business. Based on the range mentioned above of annual turnover, a food business operator has to Apply for FSSAI online Registration. These thresholds will be effective from 01st April 2026 for all Food Business Operators [FBOs] who have applied for new licenses/registrations on or after this date. Further, sufficient time will be provided for migration via FoSCoS for existing FBOs to align with the revised turnover thresholds. Street food vendors, hawkers, food carts, food trucks and similar food businesses registered under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 shall be deemed to be registered under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. However, all such vendors shall comply with the hygiene and sanitary requirements specified under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, as applicable. Fee structure To get the fee structure for registration, click here. Validity of FSSAI Food License The FSSAI Food License is of Perpetual Validity. Perpetual Validity of FSSAI Licenses and Registrations means that they will remain valid, unless suspended, cancelled or surrendered. FBOs are not required to renew their Licenses/ Registrations. However, FBOs must ensure compliance to other statutory requirements related to maintenance of hygiene, safety etc. as applicable. Process for FSSAI Food License Registration Online: FSSAI registration is initiated by submitting Form A (application for Registration) or Form B (application for State and Central License) to the Food and Safety Department or by applying online on the FSSAI Registration Portal. The application must be accompanied by the required documents. It must be uploaded online on the FSSAI Registration Portal at the time of filling up the application. This application can be accepted or it may be rejected by the Department within 7 days (Basic Registration and 60 days (FSSAI State or Central License ) from the date of receipt of an application and the rejection has to be intimated to the applicant in writing. If the application is accepted, then the department will grant a registration certificate with the registration number and the photo of the applicant.
