Places to visit in Kamareddy District

Kamareddy has been carved out of Nizamabad district. It is bounded by Nizamabad district on the North, and Sircilla district and Siddipet district on the East and South East directions respectively. It is bounded on the South by Sangareddy and Medak districts and on the West and South West by the Nanded district and Bidar district of Maharashtra and Karnataka states respectively.

The district is spread across an area of 3,652.00 square kilometers, which makes it 15th largest district in the state. According to 2011 Census of India, the district has a population of 972,625.

Nizam Sagar Dam

There are a lot of tourist attractions and things to see and experience in Kamareddy. But to enjoy the beauty of this town, one has to be well informed before exploring this destination. Visitors could be happily engaged with the never ending list of exciting things to do in Nizamabad. With this information in hand, you can be guaranteed of an awesome trip to Nizamabad. On such important tourist spot is the Nizam Sagar Dam. It is a reservoir which is constructed across the Manjira River. The Manjira river is a tributary of the Godavari, and flows between the villages Achampet and Banjapalle of the Nizamabad district in Telangana, India. Drinking water from this reservoir is the main source of water to meet the drinking needs of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

This place is located at about 144 km north-west of the state capital Hyderabad. The Nizamsagar dam was built in 1923 by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the then ruler of the royal Hyderabad. People from 40 villages we made to relocate for the construction of this dam. The place makes itself in to the list of world’s biggest places to visit. Legends like Mahatma Gandhi and Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru visited this place in 1940s. There are excellent lodging and boarding facilities nearby the dam to facilitate tourists. The Nizam Sagar Project is the 2nd irrigation scheme on the Manjira River. In 1956, after reorganization of States, the Manjira basin was distributed among the three states Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Domakonda Fort

Domakonda Fort is located in Domakonda village of Nizamabad district, Telangana. It was built during 18th Century and it has an elevated compound of granite rocks that forms the fort wall, followed by a wooden door on an entrance door to the beautiful two-storied fort structure, which consists of great stuccowork and is considered eye catchy even to this day.

This fort is also called "Gadi Domakonda" or "Killa Domakonda" as it houses a palatial mahal inside and popularly called "Addhala Meda" (Glass house). The beautiful bungalow has a courtyard graced with a water garden pond and granite pillars drilled into earth, which guards this pond. The ground floor consists of arched pillars with intricate stuccowork showing the influence of Mughal architecture. The first floor has round pillars along with a flat ceiling, which depicts Western architecture. The fort is an architectural marvel to be explored and stands a testimony to the grandeur of Telangana heritage. To this day, the royal families of Domakonda exercise administrative control the fort. Domakonda is can be reached after taking a 4 km diversion main road on the way to Nizamabad from Hyderabad (NH7) and is situated at a distance of 100 Kms from Hyderabad. The Fort premises also has a Shiva temple built by the Kakatiya rulers.

Koulas Fort

Little known Koulas fort dating back to the fourteenth century, spread across six square km has the potential of becoming a much sought after tourist destination.

Situated on the border of Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra States, 180 km from Hyderabad and 100 km from the district headquarter town of Nizamabad, Koulas fort can be a tourists’ delight as a quick getaway for one day. The trip can also be tagged on with a visit to the historic Nizamsagar, the irrigation project built by the seventh Nizam on the Manjira, and Koulasnala projects close by.

A good blacktopped road from Hyderabad passing through Sangareddy-Andole-Nizamsagar-Pitlam takes tourists to the historical fort built by the Kakatiyas in four hours. If the travellers start from Hyderabad after breakfast, they can stop at Nizamsagar project, once the lifeline of Nizamabad district, to view its grandeur. Although the two guesthouses built when the project was inaugurated are in a dilapidated condition, tourists can spend some time, have lunch and proceed to Koulas fort.

Constructed in the semi-Dravidian style, the fort is situated on the south eastern Balaghat range at an altitude of about 1,000 ft, encircled by the Koulas stream. The stream used to stand as a natural moat to the fort. This apart, the thick cover of vegetation, when viewed from the fort, is a feast for the eyes.
