Places to visit in Mahabubnagar District

Mahabubnagar (formerly Palamuru) is a town and district headquarters named after the 6th Nizam of Hyderabad - Mir Mahbub Ali Khan. It was also called earlier as "Rukmammapet".

Mahabubnagar district is of historic significance right from the period of Satavahana dynasty, followed by Chalukya dynasty. It became part of the Kingdom of Golkonda later, under the control of the QutbShahis. Later it was part of Hyderabad State, ruled by the AsafJahis, from the year 1724 to 1948. The district of Mahabubnagar is spread across an area of 4,037.00 square kilometers. According to 2011 Census of India, the district has a population of 1,318,110.

Pillalamarri

The most important place of interest near Mahabubnagar is the famous banyan tree called Pillalamarri, which is about 8-km from the city. The famous 500 year old Banyan tree covers an area of over three acres and can accommodate about 1000 people in its shade. There is a shrine of a Muslim saint under the tree.

Koilsagar Project

The Koilsagar dam, about 8 km from Koil Konda village, stretches across the Peddavagu, a minor tributary of the Krishna River. The western stretch of this picturesque reservoir is surrounded by high hills, making it a beautiful spot.

Manikonda

The Lakshmi Venkateswara shrine is on a 915 m high hill that is 2 km from the village. Manyamkonda Venkateswara Swamy Temple, located atop Manyamkonda hill, is a shrine dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara and is also called as "Palamoor Tirupathi".

Bala Nagamma (Aidamma)

This famous ancient place has perched a coveted place in the temple history due to its association with the infinitely popular Balanagamma folk lore story popularised by the Burrakatha artistes akin to Harikatha bhagavathothamas. The goddess Aidamma played a spectacular role and established for herself a permanent place. Daily pujas and the annual festival falling in the month of Sravana lure huge crowds.

Sri Ranganayaka Swamy, Srirangapur

The temple built by Krishnadevaraya is near the "Ratna Pushkarini’ lake. Srirangapur is situated at a distance of 12 kms from Wanaparthy, which is 100 kms from Mahbubnagar.

Sangameswar Temple, Somasila

This temple was shifted from Sangameswar to Somashila to protect from being drowned in Krishna water. There are many Shivalingas in the temple complex. Shivarathri and Karthikamasam are well celebrated. Pushkara snanam is considered as most auspicious. Somasila is situated at a distance of 15 kms from Kollapur which is 158 kms from Mahbubnagar and 55 kms from Kurnool.

District Museum, Pillalamarri

The District Museum, Pillalamarri was established in the year 1976 in a one-acre area. It is located at a distance of 3 km from Mahabubnagar town, close to the popular 700-year old Pillalamarri Banyan tree.

The museum is a repository of stone sculptures collected from various places of Mahabubnagar District such as Poodur, Kalwakol, Gollathagudi, Vaddeman dating back from 6th to 16th Century AD. In addition to this sculptural gallery, later another building was constructed and named Jurala pavilion which accommodates objects such as pre-historic stone tools, coins, pottery etc., that were relocated from the Jurala submergence area and other items used by local samsthanams of the region.

Currently there are 120 stone sculptures in display at the museum building and adjacent garden and more than 80 sculptures are displayed in stores without any pedestal. The collections from Amarabad of Mahabubnagar District and some of the artefacts acquired from State Museum, Hyderabad were added later. The Museum is located in a pleasant atmosphere near the banyan tree and the forest gardens.

Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve

The Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, which is spread over Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar is the largest Tiger reserve in the country. This Tiger Reserve covers a total area of about 3,568 square kms. Srisailam’s temples and reservoirs are the major attraction for thousands of tourists and pilgrims visiting the holy town.

Situated in the deciduous Nallamala forests, the mystifying landscape of the lofty hills and echoing valleys, exciting winding roads, perennial rivers, is this most charismatic world of the wild cats. It is a true wild paradise. The mighty River Krishna which rising in Sahyadri Hills and makes its way through Maharashtra and Karnataka flows across Nallamala tiger reserve. The best time to visit the Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve between the months of October to June.

Farahabad

Farahabad is at an altitude of 914 mts in the Nallamalla Hills in the Eastern Ghats. This holiday resort enjoys a salubrious climate. It has been most appropriately named Farahabad, which literally means 'Mount Pleasant'.

The Temple of Sri Kurumurthy Srinivas Swamy

This temple is on the hills of Kurupathi or Kurumurthy. It is self-manifested (Swayambhu). In 1350 AD Sri Mukkara Chandra Reddy constructed the temple. It was later renovated by Sri Ramabhupal and Kotha Kapulu.
