Center for Fundamental Studies (CFS)

Center for Fundamental Studies (CFS) is envisaged to provide leadership in updating, propagating, and imparting the knowledge in Mathematics and allied subjects that include outreach programs and other activities of a similar sort. It will function with all the infrastructural facilities, where National and International events could be held round the year with twin objectives, viz.,

  • To function as a nodal center in the eastern part of India to provide the best training to aspiring Mathematics students in mainstream Mathematics and the allied subjects like Physics
  • To promote strong interaction between Mathematics and Physics by having a vigorous visitor’s program, organising workshops, conferences at the frontiers of overlapping areas

Training Programmes in Mathematics (TPM)

As part of the activities of CFS, Training Programmes in Mathematics (TPM) are organized during summer in NISER. The main objective of TPM is to promote independent learning among students. It aims to provide a solid foundation towards mastering the art of doing Mathematics on their own by a group of mathematicians drawn from the leading institutes of India, who have a penchant and commitment to teaching Mathematics. Besides, this programme identifies young and talented students and motivates them to pursue Mathematics for their career.

The programme will be at three levels: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. The subject matter at all levels will be courses that normally form basic and core of the curriculum of the respective degrees offered in Indian Universities. This may for instance include Linear Algebra, Algebra, Analysis and Geometry and so on. Apart from this, there will be seminars by the students. Special lectures by eminent senior mathematicians are also planned.

Summer Outreach Program in Mathematics (SOPM)

  • Eligibility: Students in their Master’s program in Mathematics.
  • Courses: Algebra, Analysis, Partial Differential Equations.
  • Special lectures: Few special lectures will be given by eminent mathematicians.
  • Financial Support:  All participants will be reimbursed sleeper class train fare via the shortest route from their place of stay. The institute will take care of local hospitality.
