National Mission for a Green India

National Mission for a Green India (GIM) is one of the eight Missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change. It aims at protecting, restoring and enhancing India’s forest cover and responding to Climate Change. The target under the Mission is 10 m ha on forest and non-forest landsfor increasing theforest/tree cover and to improve the quality of existing forest.

Launched during 2014,  Green India Mission (GIM) activities were started in the Financial Year 2015-16.

Aim

Respond to climate change by a combination of adaptation and mitigation measures, which would help:

• enhancing carbon sinks in sustainably managed forests and other ecosystems;
• adaptation of vulnerable species/ecosystems to the changing climate; and
• adaptation of forest dependant local communities in the face of climatic variability.

Mission Objectives

• Increased forest/tree cover on 5 m ha of forest/non-forest lands and improved quality of forest cover on another 5 m ha (a total of 10 m ha)
• Improved ecosystem services including biodiversity, hydrological services and carbon sequestration as a result of treatment of 10 m ha.
• Increased forest-based livelihood income for 3 million forest dependent households
• Enhanced annual CO₂ sequestration of 50-60 million tonnes

States covered

Based on the perspective plans submitted by the States and as per the availability of funds, so far seventeen States namely Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and one union territory Jammu & Kashmir have been taken up under GIM.
