ABHA-based Scan & Share service

The National Health Authority (NHA) under its Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) scheme is enabling digital interventions for bringing efficiency in delivery of healthcare services. One such intervention is the Scan and Share service that is enabling instant registrations for patients at OPD (Out-patient Department) blocks of participating hospitals. This service was introduced by NHA on 6th Oct 2022. 

About the service

With the Scan and Share feature, hospitals are offering digital registration services to their patients via direct sharing of their Ayushmaan Bharat Health Account (ABHA) profile. This helps patients get instant registration tokens without having to stand in queues and without entering many details.

Any citizen/patient who wishes to participate in ABDM must start by creating the Ayushmaan Bharat Health Account (ABHA). ABHA Number, similar to a bank account number, is a randomly generated 14 digit number used for the purposes of uniquely identifying persons and authenticating them, and linking their health records across multiple systems and stakeholders.

Benefits

• Enables patients to conveniently register for Out Patient Department (OPD) appointments by scanning a QR code displayed at the OPD registration counter, thereby instantaneously sharing their ABHA profile for registration.
• The 'Scan and Share' service is now being implemented at pharmacy counters of the public hospitals.
• Plans are underway to extend it to laboratory settings.
• Upcoming services include 'Scan and Send' and 'Scan and Pay'. ' The ‘Scan and Pay’ service will enable the patients to make payments for tests or medicines prescribed to them directly through their app, eliminating the need to wait in lines for payment at healthcare facilities. Similarly, the ‘Scan and Send’ service will soon allow patients to conveniently scan a QR code at a facility (hospital or pharmacy) and send their health records, (including prescriptions or lab reports).

How does it work

• The Scan and Share service works on a simple modality of QR-code based direct information sharing.
• The participating hospitals display their unique QR codes at their patient registration counters.
• The patients use their smartphones to scan the QR codes using supported mobile app for the service (currently available in ABHA app, Aarogya Setu, Driefcase, Paytm, Bajaj Health and Ekacare).
• The patient then creates their ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) or logs in to their existing ABHA account.
• After logging in, patient can directly share their ABHA profile with the hospital to complete their registration without having to fill the form physically.
• This paperless registration results in instant token generation thereby helping the patient skip the long queue by simply using their ABHA. 

Hospitals that support this service

This service was introduced by NHA on 6th Oct 2022 at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) & Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital (SSKH) Hospital in New Delhi. The Scan and Share service is presently operational across over 5435 healthcare facilities spanning across 546 districts in 35 States and Union Territories of India.

ABDM's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS)

To drive further adoption of the Scan and Share service among hospitals and Digital Solution Companies (DSCs) providing technology to healthcare facilities, NHA offers financial incentives through the ABDM's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS) for 'Scan and Share' transactions and the generation of electronic health records.
