World Hindi Day or Vishwa Hindi Diwas is commemmorated annually on January 10.

Background

World Hindi Day is observed on January 10 to commemorate the first World Hindi Conference held in January 1975 at Nagpur, Maharashtra. The first World Hindi Day was celebrated in 2006.

It is celebrated with the objective of raising awareness about Hindi as an International Language and to promote its use across the woprld.

World Hindi Conference

The first World Hindi Conference was held in 1975 in Nagpur, India. Since then, 11 such conferences have been organized in different parts of the world. The details of 11 conferences held so far.

The 12th World Hindi Conference was organized by the Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with the Government of Fiji from 15 to 17 February 2023 in Fiji.  The main theme of the conference is "Hindi – Traditional Knowledge to Artificial Intelligence". 

Several exhibitions related to the development of Hindi language will be organized at the conference venue. Cultural programmes and Kavi Sammelan is was organized by Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi during the Conference. 

Hindi scholars from India and other countries were honored with "Vishwa Hindi Samman" for their special contribution in the field of Hindi.

World Hindi Secretariat

The idea for the setting up of a Global body for the coordination of Hindi related activities was first proposed at the first World Hindi Conference held in Nagpur, in 1975 by Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the then Prime Minister of Mauritius. The proposal was reiterated in subsequent WHCs and slowly took shape of a World Hindi Secretariat to be established in Mauritius.

An Agreement was signed between the Government of India and Mauritius and the WHS was set up pursuant to the enactment of the WHS Act by the national assembly of Mauritius.

The WHS started functioning officially on the 11 February, 2008. The main objective of WHS is to create a global platform to accelerate the promotion of Hindi as an International Language.

Significant Activities taken up across the world

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted an India co-sponsored resolution on multilingualism that mentions three major languages of the subcontinent - Hindi, Urdu and Bengali - for the first time.

World Hindi Day is celebrated across various countries and Indian embassies across the world.
