World Cerebral Palsy Day

World Cerebral Palsy Day is a global observance celebrated every year on October 6th since 2012.

The day shines a spotlight on Cerebral Palsy (CP) and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. , this day serves as a platform to raise awareness about CP, support those living with the condition, and advocate for greater inclusion and understanding. Children and adults affected by cerebral palsy often face challenges that hinder their full participation in society. The day sheds light on the need for increased awareness, understanding and support for those with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a physical disability that affects movement and posture.

Many people with cerebral palsy have other related vision, hearing, communication and mobility needs. Its impact can range from a weakness in one hand, to almost a complete lack of voluntary movement.

It is a complex disability:

• 1 in 4 children with cerebral palsy cannot talk
• 1 in 4 cannot walk
• 1 in 2 have an intellectual disability
• 1 in 4 have epilepsy.

There are more than 17 million people across the world living with cerebral palsy. Another 350 million people are closely connected to a child or adult with cerebral palsy.

Theme for 2024 - "UniquelyCP"

This year, the theme intends to share and celebrate how cerebral palsy makes one unique on World Cerebral Palsy Day. Each person with cerebral palsy is unique. By sharing their personal experiences, the world can see and celebrate the diversity of the CP community and the millions of ways cerebral palsy can touch our lives while combating stereotypes.

Celebrations in India

The World Cerebral Palsy Day, on October 6, 2024, will once again serve as a platform to amplify the voices of individuals living with cerebral palsy (CP). Under the leadership of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), the Government of India marks this day with awareness campaigns across the nation. Various national institutes and regional centres under the Department will host programmes to spread awareness about cerebral palsy and empower those affected by it.

These programmes will not only highlight the struggles of individuals living with cerebral palsy, but will also celebrate their abilities, talents, and the uniqueness that transcends the challenges they face. Through the "#UniquelyCP" theme, the day will convey a powerful message to society that individuals with cerebral palsy can achieve their goals in life with their distinct capabilities and strengths.

Cerebral palsy is often misunderstood, and those affected face numerous societal challenges. The aim of this day is to break these stereotypes and work towards building an inclusive society where individuals with cerebral palsy are respected for their identity and talents. The 2024 theme is a positive step towards raising awareness that a person's disability is not their entire identity.
